# Database templates

> Customizable database templates tailor-made for specific use cases like CMDB, Hardware Assets, and Software & Licensing.

A database template installs a predefined [database](/sections/documentation/databases/overview): a set of linked tables with their fields, relationships, and help-desk-agent settings, ready for immediate use and customization.

## Available templates

Three templates are currently available, applicable to specific ITSM use cases:

| Template | What it models |
| :- | :- |
| [CMDB](/sections/documentation/databases/cmdb) | A service dependency map used for impact analysis of business applications, IT services, and the infrastructure that delivers them. |
| [Hardware Assets](/sections/documentation/databases/hardware-assets) | Every physical device from purchase to disposal: assignment, stock, warranties, and chain of custody. |
| [Software & Licensing](/sections/documentation/databases/software-and-licensing) | Software entitlements, SaaS subscriptions, seats, and renewals. |

## Install a template

You can either install a template from the Databases library, or ask Catalyst to create the database for you.

<Info>
  Installing a template requires permission to manage database structure. For more information, see [Database administration](/sections/documentation/databases/administration#permissions).
</Info>

### From the library

1. Open **Databases**, then select **Install a database**.
   1. On **Choose your starting point**, pick a template and select **Review what's inside**.
   2. Review the **schema map**, an interactive diagram of the tables, their fields, and the relationships between them.
   3. Select any table to inspect its fields, or any connector to see the relationship it records.
   4. Optionally, rename the database and its description inline.
2. Select **Install** to create the database and all of its tables in one step.

### With Catalyst

Ask Catalyst to stand up the database in plain language. For example, "set up a CMDB" or "spin up a hardware assets database." Catalyst installs the matching template, then you can keep asking it to add tables, fields, or relationships. For more information on building with Catalyst, see [Building dashboards and databases with Catalyst](/sections/documentation/catalyst/overview).

## What to expect

* **One database per template, per team.** Each template installs a single database of its kind. Installing the same template again doesn't create a duplicate.
* **Conflict-safe install.** If a table name is already used somewhere in your team, the template's version installs under a renamed key, and the existing table is left untouched. The review page flags any renames before you install.
* **Ready to customize.** An installed template is an ordinary database. Add fields and tables, set up more [relationships](/sections/documentation/databases/schema-design#relationship-edge-types), or attach [validation rules](/sections/documentation/databases/rules) exactly as you would on a database you built yourself.

## Populate the template

A newly installed template is an empty schema. Populate it by connecting a source (e.g. MDM, IdP, SaaS-management, cloud, or procurement app) with an [ingestion config](/sections/documentation/databases/ingestion), or load records by [manual entry or CSV import](/sections/documentation/databases/manual-data-entry). One table can pull from several sources at once, with a source-of-truth priority per field.
